I’m thinking about mining some crypto but I thought I could do it with my regular computer. What the heck is a GPU?
A CPU is the common processor that is found in everyone’s computer. Think of it as the control center where all tasks are carried out on your computer.
A GPU is a more specialized processor that deals with a single task in your system, video rendering. Think Nvidia or Radeon.
GPU’s are much more efficient at mining crypto because they are designed to carry out similar, repetitive tasks much faster than a CPU, which is like the jack of all trades in your system.
In fact, GPUs can mine hundreds of times faster than CPUs.
So when you see someone’s mining rig posted online and it’s just a bunch of graphics cards linked together on a shelf, they’re using the GPU of those cards to mine coins incredibly fast.
